Happy Holidays, Everyone! It has been a long time since Mom or I have posted anything. I don't know where the time goes... I hope you have the time this season to really enjoy some time spent with family and friends. If you have any time to spare, join us at a class or two... Have a very Merry Christmas!

Quilters’ Book Club:
Our book club is open to new members at any time. The following are the book selections for each month and the meeting date for the discussion.

Classes

Recycled Sweater Mittens
Warm mittens, a Minnesota necessity! Clean out your closet, make use of a "laundry mistake" or visit a local thrift store to gather 1 or 2 old sweaters (preferably with a minimum of 70% wool content) and join the fun. Prior to class, shrink/ felt your wool sweaters as much as possible. This can be done by a number of methods, but the easiest is to wash in your washing machine on hot and dry in your dryer on hot. Repeat if necessary. Bring your own sewing machine, scissors, pins, wool sweaters, 1/2 yard of matching fleece, matching thread and matching yarn (optional for decorative stitch).

Aprons!Aprons have made comeback in popularity in the last few years. People are collecting old aprons and creating new aprons from some of the fabulous fun and bright prints that are available now. Join us for this class to make a basic apron. There will be options for adult and child size.

Materials Needed: Sewing machine, scissors, rotary cutter, mat, and ruler (opt), coordinating thread, (3) 5/8 yd pieces of coordinating fabric.

T-shirt Quilt
Another easy way to repurpose your old t-shirts! A t-shirt quilt makes a great memory quilt, use it as a way to remember a loved one to use it to showcase a part of your or someone else’s life… think graduation gift, etc. The first session of the class we will work on your quilt layout and preparing the t-shirts for use. The second session we will put your quilt top together and decide on backing and binding options along with quilting or tying options.
Materials Needed: Sewing machine, scissors, rotary cutter, mat, and ruler (opt),coordinating thread, T-shirts (lots… at least 12), 10-15 yards of fusible light to medium weight interfacing, and 2-4 yards of a coordinating fabric. (You will eventually need batting and backing fabric, but we will decide on that as the class progresses and you decide how big your quilt is going to be.)

Open Sewing/ Knitting/ Crocheting

Are You Going on the Quilt Minnesota Shop Hop?

Are you going on the 2011 Quilt Minnesota Shop Hop? It's not too late... you have until Sunday afternoon to stop at a few shops and gain some inspiration.

Last Thursday, Mom, Deb, Jenna, and I headed out on a fun filled day of shop-hopping. One positive thing about closing my shop is that I actually had the opportunity to visit some of the other fantastic shops in the area.

Heart To Hands Quilt Shop, Deer River, MN was our first stop of the day. This quilt shop is in an old church and was a great stop to kick off our day.

ABC's of Quilting, Grand Rapids, MN was our second stop. This shop is located is a beautiful old school building. There was someone playing the piano in the distance and there was even free popcorn.
On a side note, if you are ever in Grand Rapids and have some extra time on your hands, stop at Red Willow. This is a huge gift shop with everything from furniture to greeting cards in it. Some really great stuff. I purchased a purse that looks like an old tapestry carpet bag.

Then we were off to find a place for lunch on our way to Aitkin. We stopped in Hill City and ate at the Hill Lake Cafe. I had my usual club sandwich (which was good), but everyone else had the patty melt and raved about it.

When Seams Like Home was open people used to talk about a quilt shop in Hill City that was located in a gas station/ convenience store. Well, we found it and it was great. Decent selection and great prices. It is called Elaine's Quilt Corner. While we were there browsing, we decided on a new challenge. We each chose 5 one yard cuts of batiks and we will be working on 5 yard quilts at the retreat in October. (see photo above)

Then, we were off to Aitkin. First stop, Aitkin Quilts and Fabric. Looking for American Girl sized doll clothes and accessories? Then this is the place. Then we stopped across the street at Sew Much More. They have a nice variety and also a nice selection of craft supplies.

Then, it was a mad dash to McGregor before they closed the for the day. (The day just flew by) We walked in the door and, of course, were greeted with Diane's hugs. She was kind enough to stay open while we visited and shopped... so much to catch up on and a fantastic way to end the shopping day. If you are ever near McGregor, stop in at Timeless Treasures of Mcgregor and tell Diane hello from me!

Barn Block of the Month

Well, I have been working on more of the Barn Block of the Month blocks. (The blocks are from "Quilt Blocks on American Barns" by Eleanor Burns. We started this block of the month last fall when my shop was still open, but we are still trying to finish it out.)

In like a lion! Come on Spring!!

Well, it's FINALLY March. Even though it didn't snow on the first it still felt as though it came in like a lion. That wind was really something.

After some quiet weeks(the after Christmas period), things are starting to get really busy here at Seams Like Home. Spring retreats are happening all over and projects are getting started and finished up before the on-set of gardening and lawn mowing.

Wanted to show you some of the new spring projects we are featuring.

The top photo is a brand new line called "Botanical Blooms" by T'Amore Designs for South Sea Imports. One of the bolts is a panel in soft spring colors. I barely had it unpacked and I was cutting for a customer.

The "peaceful" quilt is a pattern called "Peaceful" by blue meadow designs, Cori Derksen and Myra Harder. It is marketed as a baby quilt but for all of us who were teenagers in the 70's, the peace sign feels like a part of our history.

The wildlife wall-hanging is called "Tracking the White Tail Deer" designed by Granola Girl Debbie Fields for Troy Corporation's Riverwoods Collection. The fabric line is flannel, great for a throw, or backed with a beautiful cotton for a wall-hanging. Kits are available.

Next week is busy with open daytime sewing on Tuesday the 8Th, open nighttime sewing on the 9Th, book club meets the 10Th and the day we have all been waiting for, (at least I have) day-light savings time on the 12Th.

Then there is this: The annual winter re-model at my Parents house is coming to completion. We met on two different weekends to cut tree branches, empty the garage, Sheetrock, insulate and add new wiring. Our goal of this project is to make a "Man-cave" for my Dad. My Dad is a talented woodworker, woodcarver and project craft er. The "new" garage will have heat, many outlets and superior lighting. It is the shop he has needed for years.

This is what I know: My Dad has no idea what "man-cave" even means. He has spent his whole life working on the crafts and art he adores and is so talented at without ever needing or expecting a space of his own. He worked around cars, lawn mowers, equipment and six children. He has crafted irreplaceable heirlooms for us, our children and our grand-children. We came together to give him a space that we hope he will use for years to come. The fire department was not needed this year, we broke nothing, destroyed nothing, and did not irritate the neighbors. We actually might be getting pretty good at this re-model stuff, it's probably why my folks say, next year they are staying home.

A photo collage of the 1st Annual Seams Like Home Quilt Retreat at the beautiful and historic Musser Mansion. We gathered our quilting friends and arrived at the mansion just ahead of this winter's coldest temps. When we heard that International Falls recorded a temp of 49 below Friday morning we were all glad to be snug and warm indoors. The mansion did not disappoint. The furnishings were beautiful, the sewing space was turn of the century and fun, the bedroom accommodations were spectacular. The house simply breathes history. We were all fascinated by the written stories and many of us said that in no time at all, the "house" made us feel right at home. We will venture there again in April and I can't wait to see the grounds coming alive in the spring. Saturday night dinner with candlelight on the porch over-looking the Mississippi River was a memory of good food, good wine, lasting friendships and memories made. It is really the reason we go on retreats, isn't it?

I wanted to show you some new "inspiration" here at the shop.

The panel fabric is "Patchwork Gardens"by Pat Williams for South Seas Imports.

The table topper and table runner are both created with the "Giddy" line of fabric by Sandy Gervais for Moda. The table runner pattern is a "Bakeshop Original" from the Moda website and the table topper pattern is "Happy Holidays" from Atkinson Designs. I loved this pattern in Fall and Christmas fabrics and it looks equally good dressed up for spring.

The coffee print in turquoise and brown is "Java" by Deb Strain for Moda. I just finished place mats in the last coffee print line we had but there is always room for more!

Finally also new at the shop is "Pound Hounds" by RJR. O.K. seriously, even if you don't own a dog, how can you not love this fabric.

If you haven't joined a "Groovy Girls" class now is the time to call the shop. We have gone to four sessions to accommodate everyone. The projects are quick, cute and generally finished in one night. In a craft where many of our projects take many months, who doesn't love that.

February brings our annual retreat to Woodland Beach resort. Book club meets the 10Th. Crazy Quilt class is the 21st and just when you thought you had all the projects you can hold, we are knitting socks starting the 21st. Join our master knitter Kathy as she walks us through knitting socks on circular needles. Class will meet the 21st of Feb., the 14Th of March and the 4Th of April.

And then there's this: Yesterday I was having a conversation with my daughter about upcoming events, dates I was supposed to remember, places I needed to be etc. I had forgotten most of them, had others written down wrong and generally felt completely unorganized. It reminded me of a day last summer when I was outside with my grand-son. He was driving our small battery operated car across the front yard and talking to himself. He was saying "where am I goin?" "what am I doin?" It is exactly the way I was feeling.

This is what I know:In this fast paced world of jobs, appointments and commitments it is easy to over-book, over-schedule and say yes when you really mean no. We all have many responsibilities and people who count on us not to forget things. The two retreats I have just come home from allowed me to re-charge and try to get back on track. These groups of women feed a need to connect with others as friends. Just that, friends. We encourage each other, support each other, lean on each other and give each other hope. They cut down on the days where we think to ourselves....."where am I goin?" and "what am I doin?"

Just a quick photo collage to show you some of the newest lines

here at Seams Like Home Quilt Shop. Now that the Christmas tree

is put away and winter is full upon us, the urge to sew is great and

the fabric choices are all about bright and sunny!

2011 promises to be a busy year. We are kicking it off with the

"Winter Yard Sale". Event is this coming Saturday, Jan. 15, hours are from 9-2. Stop in for $7.99 yd. pre-cuts and 20%off on cuts of 1plus yards.

Our Groovy Girls Club is the newest club here at the shop and it has been very popular. We have filled two sessions each month and have gone to a 3rd to accommodate everyone that would like to join. This is a monthly club from Atkinson Designs and it features exclusive patterns and ideas featuring new techniques for fun and quick small projects.

There is still time to register and join Chris to learn just how to utilize your sewing machine for machine quilting. Practice stitch in the ditch, outline quilting, stippling and meandering. Class is Jan. 17 from 5-8 Fee $10 plus materials and supplies. Pre-registration is necessary.

5 Yard Quilt Mania Class still has a couple of open spots. There are many patterns to choose from. Pick a pattern, 5 yards of fabric of your choice and before you know it you will have a finished project. Class is Jan. 26 from 5-8. Fee is $10 plus materials and supplies. Pre-registration is required.

Many retreats going on all over. Seams Like Home is heading to the beautiful "Linden Hill Retreat Center" in Little Falls next week. This turn of the century mansion, full of history and lovely antiques is opening their doors to us. The setting is so special it may be difficult to get much sewing done. If cabin fever has set in and a winter vacation is not in sight, call the quilt shop. Last I heard there were 2 openings left.

The winter is full of events and before we know it we will be at March 13, a day I have circled on my calender just as I do every year. It will be day-light saving time which for me signals the start of something new. This is the time of year also that my brothers and sister and our families descend on my folks house with a "to-do" list of chores. If you follow the blog you will remember that last year our "helpfulness" included a freezer full of rotten food and a visit from the fire department. This year is full of potential as we prepare to limb trees and work on the garage. Is it any wonder that my folks are saying this is their last year as Snow-birds!

Then there is this: A few days before Christmas I was meeting my husband at a store. I got there early and waited for him in my car in the parking lot. It was a great opportunity to observe people as they trudged through the snow, running errands in preparation for Christmas. Most people were preoccupied and solitary, even though they may have been with someone else. Two couples caught my attention, both for the same reason.Both couples in their 70's, possibly 80's. These couples were walking through the parking lot and they were holding hands.They were holding hands in the way that spoke of history and caring between them. When they got to their cars the man opened the passenger door, waiting for the woman to get in.

This is what I know:Some would argue that hand holding, door holding, the public showing of care and concern are all old-fashioned and outdated. People of all generations work very hard at being independent.What I know is this. At the end of everyday, life is hard. If you have a hand to hold, grab it. It makes it so much easier to find your way in the dark.

It's time for "Retreat"!!

The leaves are falling, there's a chill in the air and

the shop is full of shoppers heading to "Quilt Camp".

I'm happy to say.....we are too! I have packed

more projects than I could finish if I planned to

be gone for weeks...but as all retreaters know you

don't want to come up short. The weather report looks fabulous so walking along the country road and down by the lake will definitely be on my list. Don and Deb host us with a casualness that encourages relaxation and Melissa takes care of all the decisions.

October was filled here at the shop with events, not the least of which was the "Holiday Extravaganza". The photo shows the winner of the "Seams Like Home Quilt Shop" prize basket. She hales from Cloquet and was thrilled to be notified. The basket was filled with fabric from the new "Bliss" line from Moda and I would have been thrilled to walk away with it too.

Looking ahead, we have the new "Groovy Girls" club starting on the 25th. If you are interested there is still time to call the shop and get signed up.

The class "Getting to know your sewing machine" is scheduled for Thursday Oct. 28. November brings the "Fat Quarter Scramble" on the 17th. and classes are:

Seams Like Home will be closed in honor of Thanksgiving day on the 25th and will have reduced hours Friday the 26th(open 10-2) and Saturday the 27th (open 10-2).

The photos at the top of the blog are from a trip that my husband and I along with my parents took to the "Buffalo Round-up" in Custer State Park. We traveled west with our RVs and spent 5 beautiful days in the prairies of the Black Hills. The buffalo round-up was proceeded by an Art Festival of local and Native American art. Fantastic! The round-up itself was on Monday. Cowboys and Cowgirls from all over "Apply" to ride for this event. 14,000 people line the ridges of the canyons to watch the event unfold. The buffalo came over the rise at a dead run, herded by some of the best riders in the west. One cowboy was carrying the American flag. It was a moment straight out of the "old west" and we enjoyed every minute of it. We spent the rest of the afternoon watching the park staff, sort, vaccinate and check the herd. The cabin in the photo would be my dream home for next years summer season. It is the Badger Clark cabin located in the park limits. It is secluded and beautiful. Imagine the sewing I could get done!

And then there's this: The final photo shows Nolan and Uncle Greg, sitting side by side on their "Quad Racers". They have a bond that includes 4-wheelers, John Deere, tools and all things "boy". Greg lives in a house of women so time spent with Nolan and doing things with Nolan is precious. On Saturday Nolan spent the afternoon riding the battery powered 4-wheeler Greg found for him. He wore his helmet and rode around the yard for hours. The rest of us burned calories running alongside.

This is what I know: For that afternoon, Nolan was thinking, this just might be the best day of my life.

Welcome Fall Quilting!

WOW! I let the whole entire summer get by me with the intent to blog and no time to do it. So.....here goes.

I am hoping that you have received your newsletter. It is packed with all the new events, classes, clubs, shop hours and upcoming challenges and events.

Class registration days will be Saturday, Sept. 18Th for the October classes and Saturday Oct. 16Th for the November and December classes. Early sign-up rewards you with a 10% discount on class registration fee and a free fat-quarter.

2010-2011 Block of the Month kicks off in November. We will be doing "Quilt Blocks on American Barns" by Eleanor Burns. I have been looking forward to this since first seeing the book. As you can see in the photos, my personal quilting space is a barn. This project(my barn) my husband and my Dad worked most of the summer getting ready for me. I am so grateful.

"Groovy Girls" sewing club begins Monday, October 25Th. Join us for laughter, learning, sewing and exclusive patterns and ideas, new techniques etc. all from Atkinson Designs. Fee is $6.00 per session plus materials and supplies.

If school has started, and it has, it is time for the "Beginners Sewing Series." Join instructor Chris George as she guides you through the steps towards accurate and precise piecing techniques.

September classes include "A bag for Andrea", Sept. 23rd and "Patchwork Ironing Board covers", Sept. 30Th.

The "Quilters Yard Sale" has come and gone and it was a huge success. The tent photo shows our vendors setting up. The wind was our worst enemy, but the "tent crew" got it set up and the wind helped Marty, Melissa and I take it down. Mark your day planner for next August, this event has become much anticipated and our vendor numbers keep growing. This year the tent filled up, so early sign-up is key.

The photo of my grand-daughters shows their first project in Nannie's new sewing studio AKA "The Quilt Shack". They both made pillowcases with fabric they picked, on their very own Janome sewing machine. Fun day!

The final photo shows Poppa and Nolan taking Labor day very seriously. When the John Deere breaks down, the tools come out.

Quilters' Yard Sale

OK so I have posted what amounts to a photo album but there is so much that I want to tell you about. The summer is so busy for all of us and as the saying goes..."the livin" is easy".

Here at Seams Like Home Quilt Shop we have been sewing,arranging and preparing for the shops biggest summer event, "The Quilt Minnesota 2010 Shop-Hop". This event kicks off this Friday the 30th and for the next two weeks and weekends ending August 15th you will know exactly where to find both of us. The shop is open for this event 7 days a week. We have a store display that features a dog sled, cross-country skis, skates, snowshoes and all things winter. In the other corner of the shop is a Christmas tree, stockings and all things Christmas. With the air-conditioning running sometimes I need to look out the window and remind myself it's high summer.

The next event of late summer is the "Quilter's Yard-sale" on August 28. This will be our biggest sale yet and we hope you will make plans to attend. If you are interested there is still space available but I believe we are out of tables, so you would need to provide your own. There will be deep discounts in the shop and clearance fabric outside with the yard-sale's. The event kicks off at 9am sharp and will continue until 1pm.
I want to tell you about some of the posted photos. The children sitting together are some of my grand-children and my niece. We enjoyed a family camping weekend together at our place in the Grand Rapids area. We kayaked, swam, rode 4-wheelers, stayed up too late and ate too much. We tried to pack as much as we could into 3 days and the photo of Boomer my youngest daughters dog probably speaks for all of us when I say we were tired by the weekends end. No one does vacations better than a dog. They spend most of the time napping, they might just be on to something.
The scenery photos are shot from the patio of a hotel I stayed in when I traveled to Park City Utah with my sister. My sister travels extensively for business and occasionally she brings along a guest. I was the lucky traveler on this trip and what a treat it was. We stayed in a 5 star resort, Park City's newest, we were wined, we were dined, we were pampered and gifted. We enjoyed an under the stars acoustic performance by John Oates of the band Hall and Oates. We rode chair lifts to 9500 feet. We drank wine from a wine list that had prices like mortgage payments and I tried very hard to use the right forks and my best manners. I talked to wonderful people, heard alot of good stories, left some cash at the shops downtown and loved every minute of a chance to spend time with one of the top women in my life. I was so proud to watch her in the role that has earned her many achievements and awards. She is a business women of the highest caliber. Of course would it be a vacation without flight snafus and a side trip to urgent care? I don't think so. That is a story for another time.

The photo of the runners are my youngest daughter Heidi and two( and one little friend) of her friends. They have just finished running the five mile race that is an event for our local Willow River Days. This race is community sponsored and extremely well run, there is a corresponding walking event and every year they pull good numbers of local runners and visitors in town for one of the states friendliest and fun small town fairs.

Finally, lets talk quilting. The fall fabrics are here and they are fabulous. Fall is my favorite season to sew for. There is just something about those rich oranges, deep golds and browns, hints of metallic with some black thrown in that just makes me want to plan a new project. The shop sample is a "five-yard quilt" called "Race Track" by Mary Danielson of Easy Quilter.Com pattern comes in wall and twin size. If you haven't done a five yard quilt, you must. I went alittle crazy last winter and cracked off several. They were addicting once I got started. The two small quilts hanging one over the other are from the "Villa Rosa Designs" pattern company. We brought these patterns back from Quilt Market this spring and we just keep re-ordering. Most are either fat sixth friendly or fat-quarter friendly and we all know how much fun it is to choose those. The final photo shows our "Wine Country" fabric by South Sea Imports. Beautiful shades of plum, forest green and tan/browns.

And then there's this: My grandson Nolan has entered the season of "why". He uses it as a verb, a noun, an adjective, virtually every grammatical way you can. Every comment is answered with why, every question is answered why, it has taken the place of yes and no in his vocabulary and he accompanies it with a facial expression where his head is tipped sideways, his eyes are slightly closed and he is looking at you for answers. There is no end to conversations that have why in them and he can continue to ask with a patience that amazes me.

This is what I know: When you are two the world is big... many things surprise you, many things shock you. Nolan is just now trying to find answers to things he may have never questioned before. When you turn 50, the same is true. The world is big....many things surprise me, many things shock me and I spend much of my time trying to find answers to things I never questioned before. I'm gonna hang tight with Nolan and follow his line of reasoning. I'll turn my head sideways, slightly close my eyes and ask "why" as often as I can.

Well, team "Dashing Diva's" put another one in the record book finishing the Garry Bjorkland Half-Marathon in 2:33:34. Everyone looked fantastic!

We traveled up the back-roads around Jay Cooke State Park hoping to avoid the worst of the traffic.

The photos are of Nolan waiting for Aunt Missy, and then running for the finish with her for the 2nd time in his life. (First time was with his Mom, he was not yet born).

Summertime, Summertime

OK so we went to "Quilt Market" in mid-May and then a month got by us, just like that....

Quilt Market was exciting and frantic, as always. Melissa and I feel compelled to participate in Sample Spree, probably the craziest event ever. It makes Black Friday shopping look calm. I have to say for two girls that try very hard not to be aggressive and always be polite, we have learned that this event requires you to bring out the "fighten" side". Really tho, it's more that we know what to expect and we have a game plan. We stay focused and as hard as it is, we stand our ground.

Melissa and I both took classes. Melissa generally hits the marketing classes and this year I took the classes related to landscape quilting, photo quilting and memory quilting. I learned alot and this is an area I am going to explore. Ideally I should get experienced enough that at some point we will offer some classes to pass on what we know. We attended "schoolhouse" which are small quick sessions to introduce, new product, new authors, new pattern designers etc. Then we hit the market and put on more miles than you can imagine. Everyone from the quilting world is there and it is fun to see them as regular people and not faces in a magazine or on the television. We met alot of new people from some of our favorite states, Idaho, Utah and Nevada. We were wined and dined courtesy of the United Notions Company, more commonly referred to as Moda and when the weekend finally took it's toll, we loaded up and went out to the edge of the city and had dinner with the grand-parents.

June is half-way over and if that's the case then it means Melissa is running. Tomorrow she will again participate in the Gary Bjorkland Half-Marathon. This is the event she trains the hardest for and this year along with Deb and Jen, they will be joined by Melissa's mother-in-law, Julie. We will all be up there to cheer the ladies on but the big arguement is what time do we leave? If you have been to Duluth you know that the interstate is completely under construction. It is not pretty. Last year we also ran, not by choice. We barely made it to the finish line before the girls did. I don't want a repeat of that.

The photos show some of the projects we have going on here at Seams Like Home. The one that is just a note with web-addresses refers to my previous post. I put up a picture of those cute little dresses and then neglected to tell you about the project. The dresses are made from pillowcases and sent to countires where there is a need. Stop at the shop if you are close and we can give you a free pattern or look up the web addresses for information on what, when and where.

The "Circle of Life" wall-hanging is quick, simple and a great educational tool. I made one for my grand-daughter to give her teacher on the last day of school as a thank-you for a great year. My only wish is we had the fabric so I could have sent it the 1st day of school. So for those teachers in your life, that daycare that you trust with the best of your life or for your sewing room wall, stop in and pick up a kit. The fabric line is "Circle of Life" by South Sea Imports.

The super-cute flowers and crosses quilt is titled "Blossoms in the Breeze" by designer Linda Lum Debono. It is featured in the Feb. 2010 edition of American Patchwork and Quilting. We have kits here at the shop.

Final picture is from one of our new winter lines(yes, I know, I said winter). The fabric line is called Shivers and Company by Pearl Krush/Pearl Louis Designs.

June 25th marks the unveiling of what we have ordered for "Christmas in July". If you have been in recently you have seen the fabric case gift wrapped in the middle of the shop.

And then there's this: June 5th was the 33rd birthday of my son Mike. It is a hard day. At 9am I was in the chair of a Tattoo parlor. I made this appointment two months in advance and although they could have gotten me in earlier, it had to be that day. If you had asked my children the least likely person they knew that would ever get a tattoo, they would have said me. It was never about the pain for me it was more if you intend to mark yourself permanently the reason should be pure.

This is what I know: There is physical pain and there is pain of the heart, the head, the soul. The first does not remotely compare to the other. In the early days I remember my sister saying that in this country we don't mark ourselves to indicate we are grieving. She said there should be some outward sign. Something that when we looked at someone it would be apparent that their heart is broken. The buffalo and full moon that I had permanently etched into my hand represents Mike, his dreams, his courage. It also represents me, the broken me that needs this daily reminder that courage is a verb. It must be lived.

This is my sign.

Some things I forgot to tell you!

I'm adding a second post this week before we head to Quilt Market. I got to the shop today and realized there are some things I forgot to tell you.

First, Summer Block of the Month. This is the second summer we have offered a BOM and the spots are filling fast. The pattern is called "Sea Glass" and will be featured in the "color of the year" turquoise and also "grown-up pink". This 3 month BOM runs June through August. You will be able to pick up your kit for each month anytime during that month. Kits are $14.oo ea. mo. and the combination of the kits will include all of the fabric for the quilt top including the binding. Finished size is 43 1/2" square. Kits are cut and limited. Call the shop to see if a kit is available in the color-way of your choice.

"Turtle Pageant" featuring "Tommy the Turtle". Each summer we feature a new beauty pageant. This year it is Tommy. Drop-off date is July 29th. Call the shop or refer to the newsletter for all the official rules.

Bag Challenge: Make a bag, tote, hand-bag...the choice is yours. Drop-off day is July 15th. Voting is done by our customers and of course yourself by dropping a quarter into your favorite. The bag with the most quarters...Wins! All proceeds are donated to local charities.

Quilter's Yard Sale, our fifth year and this event just keeps getting bigger. Fee is $10 to rent space. Tables can be provided for an extra $5.00. Sell blocks, fabric, quilt tops, patterns, notions anything quilting that you are tired of or no longer have a use for. You provide table, chair and your own cash box. Sales will be going on from Seams Like Home both outside and inside the shop.

And then there's this:Yesterday I stopped over at my Grand-daughters house to drop off some fabric scraps for a school project. Alongside the drive on your way in stands a grand old Willow tree. This tree is the kind of tree that just begs to be climbed and this is the year that Monica is old enough and tall enough to reach the lowest V. She has claimed this tree as her own.

She has her favorite things hanging from the branches complete with clothesline that has camis and t's blowing in the breeze. You can tell she spends much time in the branches of this tree, she can see the farm, she can see her sisters, she can get out of the reach of Rex(the dog) and Butterscotch the cat can visit whenever she likes. It is her "home". The first that she has decorated, she will be the queen of this castle until Laura is old enough and tall enough to climb up.

This is what I know: When you learn to ride a bike and climb your first tree, you understand freedom for the first time in your life. It is a little bit of taking charge of your own destiny. I have watched Monica learn to ride her bike, standing on the pedals, wind in her hair, nowhere to go but forward and also grip a tree branch and just know, she is strong enough to climb... as high as she wants to go. She is learning independence is a feeling and a good one. It is my belief there will be no stopping her but if her "homes" are always this hard to access. I might need to remember I once knew how to climb too!

Bags packed and ready to go!

Well, after two busy weekends of sales at Seams Like Home it's time for Melissa to head to Quilt Market and find new product for the shop. She will meet with fabric representatives, walk endless isles of new product, new patterns, new fabric and new ideas.
I am the lucky one that gets to walk along side of her, offering occasional opinions and oohing and aahing over pretty much everything. Together we will attend "Schoolhouse" demonstrations, we will take classes and we will make an aggressive push through "Sample Spree" along with 300 or so of our closest friends and competitors. It is a whirlwind working vacation and I am looking forward to it. Remember our "open house" on Monday evening the 24th. I have heard rumors of a new logging line of fabric from the designer "Holly Taylor" and quite simply, I want some!

Here at the shop everything 4th of July is front and center. Stop in and see a table runner runner that could grace your picnic table for this holiday and a quick throw for over the Adirondack chair next to the fire pit for cool evenings. We have bunting on a roll for sale by the yard, you can decorate that porch railing in honor of this wonderful country we all live in. Don't forget flag day in June, a day that my Grand-parents always remembered by putting out the flag on the corner of the cabin facing the lake.

The photo of Nolan is his approval of the fabric that Heidi is putting in a new throw for herself. The top is fabric from Amy Butler but it is the backing that Nolan most approves of. It is the extremely soft(Minkee, Cuddle etc.) that everyone likes. Nolan is not put off by the color one bit. All he cares about is how it feels against his skin. So it's a throw for Mom that I think Nolan will steal to cover-up with.

The Christmas fabric is beginning to arrive. Soon the tree will be up and "Christmas in July" will be here. The first shipment of the new "Quilt Minnesota" arrived at the shop last week and as I knew it would be it is so beautiful in the actual fabric. I encourage you to stop in and pre-buy. It is going to go fast and if you wait for the hop to start in August you may run short of some of your favorites.

And then there's this: Two weeks ago Marty and I went to Little Falls for the 2 cylinder show. This event is held at the fair grounds in Little Falls, it's an auction, flea market, outdoor and indoor vendors and all things farm related. The main event is John Deere but International and Case, Ford etc. were all well represented. For years now my youngest brother and his childhood best friend have gone, this year they invited Marty and I and my Dad to go with. The photo of my 81 year old Dad shows him doing what has always been "his" job when the guys get together. He makes breakfast and after 50 years of doing it he has become somewhat of a perfectionist. No yogurt, omelets or sweet rolls here. We ate smoky fired bacon, eggs over easy, pancakes and drank pots of coffee. We stayed at "The Compound", it's a weekend get-away owned by the family of my brothers friend. A man's playground of 4-wheeler trails, deer stands, ponds stocked with fish and a pole barn turned kitchen/hang-out where you can do no harm.

This is what I know: The women in my family gather frequently for "Girls events", we shop, travel, eat fancy and drink wine. The men in the family gather too. They ride 4-wheelers, fish, have campfires and drink beer. Generally the two groups don't intersect. In the past few years I have had the fortune of "hanging with the guys" on several occasions. The rules have been broken because we need each other. I need the time to remain grounded to the maleness of life and my Dad and brothers know of no other way to help me hang on except to just be there, along side of me. They have welcomed me in to their time. The final photo is a shot of my Dad, my brother and his friend. It reminds me of a line from the commencement address "Anna Quindlin" gave when invited to speak at a College. She talks about the humbleness of life. Of what you think you know and what you really know. One of the final lines is when she interviews a homeless man that spends everyday sitting at the end of a pier, staring out at the ocean. When she asks him why he does this day in and day out, he replies, "Look at the view".

Sometimes, it's just that simple.

The samples shown above are new here at Seams Like Home. The tote is titled "Pockets a Plenty" by Whistlepig Creek Productions. It measures 13.5x15.5 and is literally loaded with interior and exterior pockets. Our sample is made in Amy Butler fabrics. The bag is somewhat unique in that it has a draw-string closing nestled inside.

The table-runner is the newest "Snap Sack" entitled "Fuchsia Fancy". The snap-sacks are complete, backing and binding included. You only add the batting of your choice.

The "Little Hot Rod Playmat" is from Little Hot Rod for South Sea Imports measures 46x52. Kits are available. Let the "little man" in your life run his cars over the fabric roads and then use as a cover-up when he naps.

The next few months are loaded with events, activities and classes. The statewide "Quilt Minnesota" Shop-hop kicks off July 30 and runs through August 15. Our pre-order options are becoming limited. If you have not yet seen the fabric mock-ups please stop in.

There is MUCH more going on and we will be updating the blog to keep you informed.

And then there's this: Saturday marks the annual running of the "Moose Run" in Moose Lake. This event is the kick-off of the summer running season for Melissa. There are probably grander running events but I doubt they are better run or better organized. This is a premiere small town running event and it gets better every year. Melissa and her running partners Deb and Jen will be at the starting line as they have been for the past several years.

This is what I know: Melissa has become the runner that her brother was. She runs just to run. Not to win, but because something in her head says she must. There is a mis-conception that running is all physical. Believe me when I say it is in your head and if it's not all the training in the world won't take you down the road. After last years race I was walking with Melissa and Jen to the cool-down area. The girls were approached by a young woman holding a notebook and camera. She was a reporter for a running magazine based in Duluth. She asked them for a comment, this is what she said. "Tell me why you run?" Melissa turned to me, then she looked back at the reporter. No one spoke as Melissa struggled for composure. Then this is what she said, "I run for my brother Mike'. It's what's in her head.

The wrap-up meeting for this years "Loon Country Shop-Hop" was held last evening and this years winners were picked.

We would like to congratulate Susan from Rush City as the winner of this year's Pfaff sewing machine. Julie from Mora the winner of the sewing retreat at Pine Needle Quilting Company. Elsie from Moose lake, the winner of Fabric, Fashions and More's gift basket. Beverly from Aitkin the winner of Country caboose Quilts gift basket. Barb from Wyoming, the winner of Timeless Treasures gift basket and Pat from Princeton, the winner of the gift basket from here at Seams Like Home. We extend our sincere thanks to the roughly 110 quilters who completed their passports and dedicated their weekend to "hopping" with us.

The photos are upcoming classes. The tote is"Bali Bags" from Aunties Two made with covered clothesline and fabric scraps. The class will be April 26 5:30-8:30. Fee is $6.00 plus materials and supplies. The class will also feature projects from "It's a Wrap" by Susan Brier for That Patchwork Place.

And then there's this: The buttons you see on the tote bag were taken from my Grandma S' button tin. Melissa has it here at the shop and when a project is made that we intend to keep, we go to the button tin for embellishments. My Grandmothers were adults in the depression years. They were a seamstress ,a quilter, home decorators and always very fashionable. They were also thrifty, removing buttons from garments when they were past prime. I am drawn to women that show the strength my Grandmothers always modeled. This brings me to my friend Betty. Betty will proudly tell you she is 87. She has been my friend for over 15 years. When I worked for the school district the job I had was her job. When she retired I was lucky enough to try to fill her shoes. Betty stopped at the shop today to purchase some supplies. When she was ready to leave she paused and questioned me if she has paid for her purchase. I assured her she had and then she told me she is having a hard time struggling with some minor forgetfulness.

This is what I know: For the past three years , four months and as many days Betty has been my friend with a relentlessness I am not sure I earned. When Mike was killed her heart broke too, for a young man that she felt so much pride in knowing and for me her dear friend. She has sent me letters filled with deep emotion and words of strength. She writes me poetry, bakes me treats, calls on the phone and when I don't or can't answer she leaves messages of encouragement and love. She hugs me frequently, holds my hand and prays for me, Marty and the girls. On Betty's worst day, she is the best friend a person could ask for. I simply love her. I hope you have a "Betty" in your life too.

Loon Country Shop Hop

Quilter's "Start your engines!"

Today is the opening day of the "Loon Country Shop Hop". The hours are today(Thursday) 9-5. Tomorrow, Friday 9-7 and Saturday 9-5. The beauty hanging here is our version of this years Shop Hop Quilt. The name is "Stars at Bear Cabin" and the pattern was designed by Kim Tyson of "Country Caboose Quilts" in Wahkon. We have created our sample with Batiks which as become our signature over the years we have been part of the "hop". We hope you like it. This beauty is going home with me. It is King-size and the stunning machine quilting was done by Linda Beal of "Linda's Quilting by Design" of Hinckley. Linda worked tirelessly to have the quilt quilted in time for us to hang it this am. The over-all quilting pattern is called "In the Moment" , I like that. The post today will be short as the quilter's are arriving and Melissa is getting swamped.

A quick update on the "make-over" at my parent's home. They arrived home safe and sound and we were waiting at the end of the driveway. The changes we made over the winter they absolutely loved. They may have felt for a brief moment that it was someone else's house but everything about it still said "home".

And then there's this:

I have a friend who is in the local nursing home recovering from knee replacement surgery. Last week I wanted to go and visit and I had 2 year old Nolan for the day so he came along with me. Nolan is social as only a 2 year old can be. He strikes up conversations in the post office, with people on the street, virtually anywhere he goes. He is curious, animated and kind and he is convinced all people are the same. When we got to the nursing home we walked down two long hallways with residents sitting outside their rooms. Nolan greeted everyone alike, he said "hi" and lifted his pants leg to show off his cowboy boots. He told them about the new railing(log) that Poppa is making and announced we were going to see "Mary". When we were done visiting Mary we went to say a quick Hi to Nolan's Great-grandmother. When we left she put out her hand to shake Nolan's but he put out his arms and hugged her and then kissed her cheek.

This is what I know: Nolan sees people as people only. Not with frailty, dependence on adaptive devices, not with age or mental or physical ability. He was truly happy to be where he was and showed no fear or discomfort at an environment some find uncomfortable. He told everyone what he had on his mind, he spread joy without even trying and when he was faced with a social situation at one point that he had no experience with, he danced. We should all be so brave.

The new fabrics of spring seem to have helped usher in awesome spring weather. We have been enjoying highs in the upper 50's and after a long, long winter this seems like a heat-wave. Today tho is a reminder that we aren't quite out of it yet but we will be soon.

"Modern Meadow" by Joel Dewberry for Free Spirit and "Flutter" by Allison Jane Smith for Windham Fabrics. Beautiful contemporary prints that just make you want to throw open the doors to the porch or crack the window in your sewing room and whip up a new tote for the upcoming "Shop-hop".

The 6th annual "Loon Country Shop-Hop" kicks off Thursday April 8 at 9am. The hours are th. 9-5, fri. 9-7 and sat. 9-5. This years hop promises to be something special. We have started the "shop hop quilt" and it is going to be beautiful. All 4 shops will show the quilt in fabrics of their choice. When the shops get together for our wrap-up meeting it is always fun to see the difference the fabrics choices make. New this year we welcome "Pine Needle Quilting Company" as a stop on the hop. Pine Needle is a retreat house located in Pine City on the beautiful shores of Cross Lake. Looking ahead: The 1st of April we return to our summer hours. The shop will be open Mon.12-6, Tuesday 10-5, Wednesday 10-6, Thursday 10-6, Friday 10-5 and Saturday 9-4.

Upcoming classes include the "Sweet Harmony Bag" on the 25th of March, the "Curve Appeal Tote on the 29th of March, "Day-n-night Quilt" on April 1st(no fooling) and the "Binder/Notebook cover on the 5th of April.

As always, we continue with open sewing on tuesdays. Book Club the 2nd thursday of the month, BOM on the 1st Saturday of the month and special events every Friday.

Saturday,March 20 is National Quilting Day. Stop in and take a short quilting quiz and be entered in the drawing for a draw prize.

And then there's this: Over the winter my brothers and sisters and our children have been doing some cosmetic work on my parents home. They have been in Texas enjoying the wind and unbeknownest to them we have been going "hog-wild" on their house. We thought we had a couple of weeks left to finish up but they called and are breaking camp early. Yikes! The truth is the house is ready but we are all feeling alittle uneasy that they might not be prepared for the liberties we have taken.
My sister said we should put a sign at the end of the driveway that says "Move that Bus!", my parents don't watch that show though so I am afraid the message might be lost on them.

This is what I know: My parents are conservative hard working people. They are generous and kind to a fault. They have modeled a life of "if you don't have something good to say about someone, say nothing." They have reached an age where as life long "do-it-yourselfers" they aren't able to go it alone. In a world of fast change, they manage very well but decisions about some things come hard. What we did this winter, they could have done but we hope in our doing it we saved them some money, some energy and some work. My brothers and sisters and our children came together and made the decisions as a group. We laughed, we shopped, we worked hard, we made the neighbors talk. At the end of the day, we stood in the kitchen and felt humbled and united. As I always do when family gathers and memories are made, I think of Mike. He would have been the first to say "Way to roll". My Mom and Dad are the Captains of a very large ship. They are so loved.

2 weeks and counting!!

O.K. I'll admit it. I have had daylight savings time circled on the calender since I put the new calender up in January. In two weeks we will "spring forward" and although I know winter won't be over, in my head..... it will.

The posted photos are a visual display of some of the newest fabrics at Seams Like Home. The inside of the shop looks and feels like Spring. The fabrics are fresh, fun and ready to turn into the perfect quilt to welcome Summer.

The vintage farm table holds "Olivia's Holiday" and "Pineapple Post" by Tina Givens for Free Spirit. The center photo is "Montana Modern" by Benartex and "Lakeside Resort" by Holly Taylor for Moda. The photo on the far right is "Oz" by Sanae for Moda. The sideways photo(sorry!) shows "Love" by Amy Butler for Rowan Fabrics, also new in this area, "Nicey Jane" by Heather Bailey for Free Spirit. With more fabrics arriving daily, sometimes you just have to pick a project and get started. I am currently working with "Nicey Jane" it's going to be a hard quilt to give away.

February was our annual winter retreat and I think we made the most of it. The women now come together as old friends, we know each others stories, the routine is familier, so many beautiful projects get started and some even get done. We rest, we get pampered(thanks Cindy) and we look forward to the next time we all get together. We have a waiting list so if you would like your name added, call the shop. We absorb new people in and by the end of the weekend they are part of the gang.

March will be a busy month here at Seams Like Home, we kick off the month with the label class. Join us to learn about using your computer and printer to design the "Story ending" to your quilt. Classes include the "Sweet Harmony Bag" and the "Curve Appeal Tote". We have a "pin cushion workshop" and with Block of the Month, Thimbleberries and our Book Club, April will be here before we know it.
April brings our "Loon Country Shop Hop". This years dates are April 8,9 and 10. Hours are on the 8th 9-5, the 9th 9-7 and the 10th 9-5. I'll also be in the shop more in April as will Deb and Wendy. Melissa has several commitments that will take some of her time. We are always happy to see you all and try very hard to help you as Melissa would.

The poster displays for this years "Minnesota Shop Hop" are up and we are taking advance orders. Stop in and see the "Mock-ups". The fabric is in shades of Blue and White and is "true Minnesota" and darling!

And then there's this:

I have spent the winter removing photos from old albums, re-organizing them and placing them in new albums. It has been a huge job that at times I could not see the light at the end of the tunnel. We all have thousands of photos and if you are like me you spent years getting doubles of every photo you took. Needless to say, now I have to try and remember if I've seen a certain picture before and if yes, I need to throw one. (Yikes!) I was telling my Mom and she said she did the same thing when she was around my age. Then she said"I don't know what we'll ever do with all those albums, who is going to want them?"

This is what I know. Yesterday, while my grand-daughters were here I was working on one of the albums. My youngest grand-daughter was sleeping. The 4 year old was sitting across from me and she was looking through an album I finished a couple of weeks ago. It was quiet, so quiet I could hear the kitchen clock ticking. I looked over at Laura and she was turning pages slowly, I watched her eyes as they traveled from one photo to the next. She spent time with each photo, studying the faces, engraving the image in her head. Some of the photos she was in, many she was not. It didn't matter. She gave each her complete and undivided attention. It was concentration in it's purest form. She was stamping footprints on her heart.

That is why we take photos, that is why we save photos.

So to answer my Mom: I'll want them, my brothers, sisters, and all our children will want them.

They are "our" footprints.

It's back to business today and Melissa and I would like to take this time to send you wishes for a peaceful and productive New Year. It was so good to unlock the shop doors this morning and see the "new look". Although Melissa was here most everyday over the holidays, I wasn't. So...I spent about a half an hour walking around, seeing what's new, eyeing up the samples and feeling a renewed sense of "let's get sewing".

Most of us have retreats planned for late winter and early spring and with the Christmas projects sent out to their new owners, the field is wide open for inspiration.

By now I hope all of you have received the new newsletter. I read through it myself this morning and frankly I plan to take every class. I think Melissa has gone above and beyond and found projects to make the winter fun. Love the t-shirt scarf, the re-cycled sweater mittens, all the handbags, the "It's a wrap! Bowls and Baskets(I'm making the sample for this one) and well you get the picture. We are offering again the class for Photo Quilt Labels, Thursday March 4. I simply cannot urge you strongly enough to take this class. Don't tell your story on the front of the quilt and leave off the ending. If for some reason the newsletter did not make it to your inbox, please call the shop. We don't want you to miss a thing.

New lines here at the shop include "American Vintage" by Windham Fabrics, also from Windham "Botanical", "Marrakesh"from Blank Quilting also from Blank "Winter Wonderland" and "Evening Mist" by Sentimental Studios for Moda. The sweet valentine's table runner featured in the photos is from "L'Amour" by Sandy Gervais for Moda and sells for $20.99 and includes everything for the project. The featured quilt is "Dot to Dot" it measures 48x72 and would make a sweet quilt for some little gal in your life.

Open sewing every Tuesday. Block of the months are 4 months strong and starting to visualize the finished project. "Quilters Book Club" starts next Thursday. We'll meet on the 14Th, the first book is "The Quilter's Apprentice" by Jennifer Chiaverini and we are sewing blocks from "Sylvia's Bridal Sampler".

Today before work I was running errands, feeling distracted and running late. I stopped at a stop sign and crossing the road in front of me was an elderly gentleman, maybe 80 wearing bright red tennis shoes. It's going to keep me smiling for the rest of the day.

Hustling and Bustling!

"Hustling and Bustling" are the words of this season I remember hearing as a child. That is exactly what everyone is doing!

Here at Seams Like Home we invite you to stop in and see the entry's in the "Dancing with the stars" contest. I have posted the photos but as we all know, photos never do the real thing justice. Voting is ongoing and will continue until the 19th of December. Winners will be announced Monday the 21st.

On Saturday December 19th, Seams Like Home is hosting our annual "End of the Year Inventory Reduction Sale". Sale is from 9am-2pm, all fabric cuts of one yard or more are 15% off. Also,15% off all kits and 10% off all other In-stock merchandise. A great time to treat yourself to that project you've been eyeing up.

We have new hours for the Winter Season. The shop will be open 12-5 on Mondays, 10-5 Tu-Fri and Sat. 9-2. Please make note and we will let you know in the Spring when we return to Summer Hours. Also FYI the shop will close at 1pm on December 24 and will re-open Saturday January 2,2010. OK I think that takes care of the business news.

Like everyone I am sewing for Christmas. There was a point in late October that I thought I may not get it all together. I am happy to report that other than 2 labels, I am done except for the wrapping. We have seen many lovely projects and creative designs that are going to make someone happy over the holidays.

Quilt retreat in Febuary will be here before we know it. If you are joining us, December is the month deposits are due. Maybe pick up something at the sale on the 19th for Feb. sewing.

The predictions for snow are in the forcast. I see flakes flying in the air. This Saturday, the 12th, is the 3rd running of the "Mike Breeggemann Memorial Denham Dash". We hold this event the 2nd weekend of each December to raise money for the local fire department in Mike's name. It is always "cold!" yet everyone still comes and joins in. The race is a fun walk/run from Mike's driveway to Mikey's bar. Call the shop for more info., we'd be pleased to have you join us.

And then there is this: Yesterday I set up the Christmas tree. The first time since 2006. It was hard. Mike and Christmas are very tied together in my mind. The last year Mike came home I had just finished setting up the tree. When he came over and saw it he said"you got the tree up, it looks great." That tree stood untouched for the next 18 months. It did not come down until Marty and I sold the house and I was forced to take it down. At one point I even thought about transporting it fully decorated to Mike's house where we now live. You see it wasn't just a tree anymore, it was the last tree. I set the tree up yesterday and then I stood back and said what I say every-year, "Isn't the tree beautiful", I could hear Mike saying "what took you so long".

And finally, last week Mike's friend Sam from the Hotshot Crew stopped in on his way across the country to visit his folks in Upstate New York. We were having coffee the morning he left, talking fire and Sam told me this. He said one of the most important lessons he learned from Mike when Mike was the Squad Boss of the crew was this. Mike said, "when you get to a fire, there will be alot of personnel there, Government and Private. Many people with differing opinions, skill levels and work ethic." He said "you look around and decide who your people are going to be, and then you go and fight the fire". In my mind the same holds true for all life. You look around and decide who your people will be and then you go and fight the fire.

Did I say "later today"?

O.K. I know I said "later today" and yet somehow 2 weeks
managed to get by me. Nevertheless, I want to introduce
you to my newest grand-daughter Mallory. The proud Mom
in the photo is my daughter Katie. Both Mom and Mallory are
doing well and for that we are thank-full. Mallory joins
her two sisters, Monica and Laura and for Kevin and Katie, and all of our family, they are a "hat-trick" of the best kind.
Here at the shop it is busy, as usual. Although we didn't make it to Houston this fall, Melissa and I always take in Tri-State. The local trade show. We attend the meeting which this year featured a presentation of new and great from this years Market. It was then followed by an open forum discussion of business management techniques and marketing ideas. The "giveaways" are always great, the vendors really step up and donate from their product lines to entice the shop owners. We have been going often enough now that most faces are recognizable and names come much easier.
Back at the shop, we are cutting fat quarters until I could do it in my sleep. Make preparations for the "Fat Quarter Scramble" next tuesday. Arrive early, when they are gone, they are gone! New fabric arrives daily and although Fall fabric is still #1, we are seeing customers searching for last minute Christmas ideas. To help them out, Melissa has kitted table-runners in 3 different combinations. They are cute, fast and inexpensive. We've placed our Moda order from the new lines shown at Market. This fall we asked for help from the customers because it was all lovely and very hard to choose. We got some good advice and look forward to the new bolts arriving starting after the holidays. Open sewing is held all tuesdays, join us whenever you have the time. We have some modified hours our the long weekend of Thanksgiving. I will be working on Friday for any of you that don't participate mega-shopping craziness.
And then there is this:
After we leave Tri-State it has become tradition for us to go over to IKEA. We love that store and like to just follow the trail through the store gathering ideas and picking fun stuff up along the way. We reached the check-out area and the lines were long. Melissa was holding Nolan and very untypical for him he had fallen asleep in her arms. A woman waiting in the next line came over to Melissa and told her how she envied the fact that Melissa was able to hold that little boy and how you never forget how great that feels. She said her son is now eleven and no longer stands still for any affection, much less getting held. And then she said this. "I wish I knew when I was doing it, that it was the last time that my son would let me hold him like that. I wish I would have known it was the last time"
This is what I know. You never want to know the last time of anything good. You do not want to know.

Let's hear it for Quilt Camp!

Our "Quilt Camp" group took some time off to pose for a quick photo.

group. What a great weekend! I am always amazed by just how much sewing and projects you can finish when sewing is your priority. Quilt camp has become a
gathering of friends. We get together twice a year and we are
now as comfortable with each other as a group can be. We share
inspiration, ideas, projects and plans. More importantly though
we share stories, laughter, support and wine. We look forward to February when the group will gather again.
In the shop we are in full Autumn swing. There is something about the fabrics of Fall that speak to all of us. Those rich reds, brillant oranges, multi-colored greens and deep golds. They are simply everyone's colors.
I hope you have marked your calenders for the "Fat Quarter Scramble" it is coming up November 17th. Call the shop for details. Also looking ahead: Our Thanksgiving weekend Sale, Friday the 27th and Saturday the 28th.
Again this year we support "National Tie-one On Day". November 21st. Make your favorite apron (we have many patterns in the shop for inspiration), bake a loaf of bread, wrap in the apron along with an inspirational poem handed out at the shop. Deliver to someone you know, thats needs a little support, understanding and love. If you have much to be thank-ful for, pass it along.

What? It's September already!!

O.K. So while the cooler mornings, the sun setting earlier and the quietness of kids being back in school are all indications Summer is waning, Fall has still snuck up on me. August was a whirlwind of "The Minnesota Shop-Hop" followed by the "Quilter's Yard Sale" and of course one day spent at the State Fair.

Here at "Seams Like Home" it is everything Fall. The "Gobble. Gobble" wall-hanging is a pattern by Sandy Gervais-Pieces from my Heart with a fabric line by the same name from Moda. The turkey is imploring you to "eat more pie!"

Melissa has also put together from a "Gobble, Gobble" honey bun a quick project that would make a great wall-hanging , a table-topper or couch throw.

The lovely new fabric line in shades of plum, soft green and rich Burgundies and black is "Eva",new from Basicgrey for Moda. We have layer cakes, charm packs and yardage.

We are showing the ever popular "Bow Tucks" bag pattern by "Quilts Illustrated" in the new "All Star' line from Riley Blake Designs. And the last picture is the porch pillow pattern in "Mary Engelbreight" Christmas. You may remember I am lobbying for them to be a project at the upcoming fall retreat. Stop in and pick out your jelly roll, the pattern is free with purchase. The pillows are fun, quick to make, simple. Enough said.

Upcoming and worth marking your calender for is the "Fat Quarter Scramble". November 17,2009. Doors close at 6:00pm and re-open at 6:30pm. Scramble is one hour from 6:30-7:30pm. This event has grown every year and we encourage you to be at the doors when they open for the best selection.

January of 2010 we are starting a book club. It will be a "Quilters Book club" and we will be reading and sewing with the Jennifer Chiaverini series "The Elm Creek Quilter's". The first novel will be "The Quilter's Apprentice" and the quilt blocks we will be making are from Jennifer's book "Sylvia's Bridal Sampler". I spent the morning meandering through our local town as they held city-wide garage sales. If you were to ask my family they would say that I have always been an auction person, a garage sale person, I like thrift stores and hand-me-downs. It is interesting to me what people save and what they sell. What they treasure and what they give away. My possessions are eclectic and varied. Although I will be the first to admit to many collections like Fiestaware that I watch for, my true passion is family memorabilia. If I have something that came from my Grand-parents or my parents it will stay in my charge until one of the kids or Grand-kids decides they would like to have it. It is one of the reasons that I find it interesting that one day a couple of years ago in a random conversation with my Dad, he felt the need to tell me that he has traps he has saved for years and although he knows they are collectible he hopes that my brothers will take them when the time comes. They were words not needed. My Dad knows that he raised children that understand when it comes to family memories we know how to care for them. I was fortunate enough today to bring to my youngest daughter, a framed needlework of wildflowers made by her husbands Grand-mother. The stitching is intricate, the coloring is beautiful, my daughter will treasure it until it is time to pass it on to her son. There is much in my life I was saving for Mike. It would have given his Dad and I the greatest joy to pass things on to him. I now care for Mike's things and it is something I give reverence and respect. You see, Mike was very much like me, a holder of tradition and it is important that I get this right. Everything Mike owned is a memory. A story from his life. We honor those who go before us, by caring for what they've left behind. Mike would want me to move forward, but he would also know that I will never let go.

Playtime's Over

Mike and the fire guys used to have a saying "playtime's over" when R&R days were done and it was time to go back to the flames. Melissa and I and the rest of our gang just returned from spending 4 days along the beautiful North Shore. Out destination was Grand Marias but we meandered getting there. Grand Marais smiled on us with perfect weather,sunshine filled days and gentle nights. It is a hard town to leave. Our last evening up there we traveled up to "Trail Center" (30 miles up the Gunflint from Grand Marais, a must go). A local fellow, a musician was home from Nashville visiting his family. After some encouragement he opened the old upright piano in the corner and rocked the bar with "Great Balls of Fire". Perfect end to a great vacation. One of those moments where we were in the right time and the right place. His name is Tim Styles and I looked...he has a website. Take a moment and check it out.
So for us it truly is "Playtime is over" as we prepare to host old friends and new for the "Great" Minnesota Shop Hop. I know many of you are formulating your travel plans. I fielded some phone calls yesterday regarding hours etc. We have a dear and valued customer who has family come from the west coast and they travel most of the state in the next two weeks complete with 3-ring binders, with ideas, patterns and sites to remember. If you are lucky enough you may run into them somewhere, they will be the three that are just having the best time. Here at "Seams Like Home" we are ready. The welcome mat is out. The coffee pot is ready. The Minnesota Fabric is the first thing you will see as you come in the door. If you don't have ideas for a project, believe me when I say, we do.
New to the shop this week. Apron panels and embroider able tea towels on the bolt. Fabric is RJR and could not be cuter. The newest "Snap Sack" arrived yesterday and in the spirit of the new RJR fabric I chose a retro summer look for the fabrics. Sample will be done by days end. Stop in and see. The "Snap Sacks" have really caught on. Fun, Quick and everything you need for just $12.99. You only have 3 more days of "Christmas in July" hurry in and get those projects while all things Christmas are on sale.
And then there is this. When we were in Boise this past spring my husband and I were visiting with some folks from Yellowpine Idaho when the woman mentioned to me that she was a quilter. We were 48 miles up the mountain, single lane road on the edge of the "Frank Church Wilderness River of No Return", I think you can understand the remoteness of this place. I asked if I could see some of her work. She graciously said yes and took me into her sewing room. Imagine my surprise when the first thing I saw was an early model Gammill on the frame and more shelves of fabric than I have ever seen in a personal collection. This wonderful woman was well into her 80's with a passion for quilting that picked you up and swept you along with her. She gave me a "show and tell" that was beautiful and inspiring. She loved to do applique and had quilts on every bed in the house. She told me though that her eye-sight was failing and that all the corrective measures available had been tried. She was no longer able to sew. She walked through that room though and touched her fabric as though she were planning "the next project". This was the lesson. Here at the shop I so often hear, "I have so much fabric, I don't need anymore" when nothing really could be further from the truth. If it is your passion, feed that passion. There is a woman in remote Idaho we could all learn from.

Did we miss August?!!!

I am wondering where the last half of July and the whole month of August have gone? As I sit down to write it is overcast, chilly and misty. I am a summer girl and rarely if ever complain about the heat. The heat will be back and August is coming, I hope you have circled the 22nd on the calender and will come and shop or come and sell at the "Quilter's Yard Sale". This event has grown every year. The more sellers the more fun so pack up those UFO's, books and patterns-not quite right and fabric that no longer speaks to you. It is true that one man's "stuff"s is another man's "treasure" so bring those treasures to sell. You can still get space and a table. Call Melissa at the shop(hopefully before July 31st) and she will put you on the list. "Seams Like Home" will have lots of specials, lots of deals, lemonaide and treats. Come and join the fun. We set up a tent for inclement weather but as to date the weather has always been fine.
Seams Like Home has a new look inside. It was time to move things around in readiness for Quilt Minnesota and Fall. Some of the summer samples have been taken down and new samples have taken their place. There is inspiration everywhere and advice and assistance whenever you need it.
This is the week that my small niece heads to camp. She has been looking forward to this all summer. I am sending her a letter with some money inside for the "store". She is going with one friend, otherwise she will know no one. Such courage should be rewarded.
And finally this. My husband and I went to the movies this past week. We went to our little small town one screen movie theater. I love this place. Multi-plexs have their points but you simply cannot replicate the look, the feel and the smell of a theater that has been around as long as the "Lake" has. This theater has loads of neon signs, a ticket window where "back in the day" I imagine tickets were sold as you stood outside, hot buttered popcorn and the newest releases. OK, so the movie we saw was Disney's "Up" it was an animated poignant story of loss,unfinished dreams, deep love and a child that marches to his own drummer. In the end it was about gently letting go. The crowd was small, mostly adult. There was a young Mom there with two small girls around 4 and 6. They sat close together, eating popcorn, sharing their drinks, the girls were completely captivated by the movie. They showed the full range of emotion from devastation and tears to loud no holding back laughter. They didn't censor themselves ,they did not care what others thought. At the end of the movie, they clapped. Such honest emotion, not even on the screen. They were worth every penney of the admission price. Till next time!

The days of summer pass too quickly. We are half-way through "Christmas in July" and heading towards the Quilter's yard-sale. We are getting very close to the start of the "Quilt Minnesota" shop hop. This event runs from July 31st to August 16Th. The fabric is very "Minnesota" and I can't imagine being from this state and not wanting something for the cabin, the camper or the family room out of this fabric. Here at "Seams Like Home" Melissa has samples of a large pillow, a quick pillowcase and a fantastic year-round tote. Please see photos. During the event we will be open 7 days a week, all shops will be open M-Sat. 10am-5pm and Sunday Noon-5pm. Grab a friend or take some much needed "just me" time and hit the road. A convertible is optional but would sure be fun! If you don't have a "top-down", put in your favorite travel CD, crank up the air and sing at the top of your lungs. Stop in to pre-order your fabric, we will cut it, package it up and it will be ready for you the 31st.

I intended to write about our trip to Boise but I think Melissa spoke for the family. In many ways it was something much bigger than words. I remember many years ago while vacationing in Grand Marais, we were eating at "Trail Center"( a restaurant Mike told me about where the fire guys would go when working in the area, another put on your must see list) anyhow I was lamenting about all those in the family that were working or whatever and not there with us and wishing they were, when my Dad said something I never forgot, he said "I'm just glad I'm here" and the truth of that has never left me. Sometimes it's just enough, that you are there. Fourteen of us went to Idaho to represent Mike. We made a memory. My 80 year old Dad stood up in a crowded auditorium of grieving Firefighter families and when it was our turn he said in a loud, clear voice words he never wanted to say under these circumstances. "We are here for Mike Breeggemann". We went to Boise searching for some peace, Boise did not let us down. God Bless the Wildland Firefighter Foundation, they are doing his work.

This is the week that my Mom and 8-9 of her best girl friends vacation on the shores of beautiful Sturgeon Lake. They have been coming here for as many years as I can remember. They pile in a couple of vans loaded with food, clothes, cards and cocktails. They will laugh, play cards, eat, visit all the local sights and sun themselves on the lake. What they do best for each other though is listen. These women have seen each other through all that life is, both the good and the unbearable. They are in their 60's, 70's and soon to be 80's. Their group started out known as the "Sassy Lassie Homemakers". They are not ashamed of this. That is what and who they are. They made homes for husbands, passels of kids and themselves. I am a grateful recipient of their sacrifices. May they travel safely. They are the Matriarchs of many.

And finally this. Today is the 27Th birthday of my youngest daughter Heidi. Heidi is a child of the "break dancing" generation. When she was four, I am not even kidding you she had a dance routine that would send people into peals of laughter. To say she was a ham would be an understatement. She is a "glass-half-full" person and feels things on the deepest level with as much soul as you can pack into one person. I consider her one of my closest friends and best confidantes. Her son Nolan shows all indications that he will be Heidi-the next generation. I always thought guardian angels that helped give you strength were older, but I know for a fact I have seven that stay with me each and everyday. Happy Birthday Babe! Till next time!

Melissa and her running partner Jen celebrate after finishing the Gary Bjorkland half-marathon in Duluth and Melissa shares a quiet moment with her smallest fan, nephew Nolan.

Well we traveled to Duluth on one of the hottest days we've had this year to watch Melissa finish the half. This is her second running of this race. The first was two years ago when she ran it for the first time with both of her sisters and Mike's good friend Ana. They trained hard to run in memory of Mike. It was the start of a running life-style. I joke that Melissa is like Forrest Gump. She "just started runnin'" and she shows no sign of letting up. Melissa and Jen were joined by Jen's Mom Deb who wasn't available for a photo. Many of you know Deb as she occasionaly works here at Seams Like Home. They ran under the team name of the Dashing Diva's and they all finished in their expected time and looking very strong. The entire city of Duluth seems to be under construction and we had to get very creative to reach the finish line before the "Diva's" did. If you haven't had the opportunity to be in Duluth for the running of Grandma's, put it on your must see list. The excitement, the crowds, the inspiration. It is as much a spectator event as it is a running event.

Seams Like Home is getting ready for "Christmas in July". This year though the Christmas fabric is flying out the door. We may get the tree up, the Christmas music playing and already be sold out of the bulk of the lines we ordered. Stop in and see what's in store for 2009. We still have some snap sacks of the 4th of July banner. These snap sacks are quick and easy. Everything you need except the batting for $12.99. You still have time to have one hanging on the front door before Saturday.

Today it was time to clean up the scrap box and so there are plenty of new grab bags in the red shopping cart. All grab bags are $4.00 and are a fun way to add some stash in random colors and prints.

I'm pulling out the "Turning Twenty" pattern, my go-to pattern for a quick quilt. My grand-daughters have bunk beds now and that gives me a chance to create new "girl quilts" for them. Monica took a look at the fabrics I chose and gave me the thumbs up. Laura liked them too, but they both wondered if I could put some Princess' on the quilts. They don't get that they are the princess'.

And then this. This past weekend I went to a graduation party for my niece Mollie. I made Mollie the "Carpenter's Star" in shades of deep purple as her graduation quilt. Mollie is gifted academically but more than that, Mollie is an "old soul". She is that person that "shows up", is present and "gets things". I could not be prouder of her. I put a label on the back of Mollie's quilt with the message I wanted her to have from me. A quilt label is the finishing touch and you MUST put one on every quilt you make. Mollie's had a line from the song "The River".

Last week simply flew by! We hit the ground running on Monday with quilters traveling north to prepare for the Minnesota Quilt Show and Conference. We were participating in the "Great Potty Stop Hop" and the quilters just kept coming. Everyone having so much fun. It was a bit of the "school just let out" feeling with the summer or in this case the week stretching out with so many possibilities. Singles, couples, groups and buses, we had them all. The staff here at Seams Like Home thanks each and everyone of you who stopped in for a visit. Melissa and I were able to get to the show on Thursday. What inspiration, what talent. We were humbled and awed. We spent time slowly honoring the Alzheimer's quilt projects. Stories told from the heart that had to be read slowly and completely. We congratulate all the ribbon winners and everyone who "jumped off the dock" and sent part of who they are to be viewed and appreciated. We submitted work of our own in the non-judged category. "Wildfire" was pieced by both Melissa and I in 2007 to honor Mike and his career as a Wildland Firefighter. We hope you saw it.
Here at the shop today it's all about playing catch-up and putting things back to order. When I get a chance to catch my breath I want to tell you about our amazing trip to Boise.

Trip to Boise part 2...

We all have "Team Breeg" forest service green shirts from when we ran Grandma's Half Marathon in honor of Mike. Now we use the shirts for other events too. Each December we have a fun run called the Mike Breeggemann Memorial Denham Dash, with all proceeds benefiting the Sturgeon Lake Fire Department. (More details in November. It's a open to anyone to join the fun!)

Smokey Bear visited the Family Fire Weekend and Nolan and Dad got acquainted with him.

Mike's memorial marker. His marker was placed in a beautiful spot in the memorial garden. The garden has a waterfall and bronze statues of wildland firefighters. It is a very peaceful place and Mike would be honored to be a part of it all. We will forever love and miss him.

Our Trip to Boise...

Back from Boise and the Wildland Firefighter Foundation Memorial. It was an incredible trip, very emotional, but very special. The way they honored Mike and the other firefighters was exceptional.

Nolan "busy" at the airport! It was his first trip on an airplane and he did great!One of the activities for the family fire weekend was the "Lucky Peak Challenge." This is a run/walk/slog to the top of Lucky Peak in Boise. It is a 3000 foot climb winding around 6 miles of trails. At the top is a toast to our fallen firefighter friends and family and then back down the 6 miles of mountain trails. It was quite the challenge, but so worth it. The picture above is a shot from the top of the peak. The challenge was started to honor the firefighters lost in the Storm King Fire of 1994. One of the fallen firefighters brother is one of the founders of the race. All proceeds benefit the Wildland Firefighter Foundation.
It was amazing what kind of refreshments people pulled out of their backpacks at the top. This is Chad (one of the race organizers) and he brought all the fixings for martinis, including stuffed olives!

I was lucky enough to be able to do the race with firefighter friends of my brother, Mike. We are pictured above with Mike's favorite "Champange of Beer" for the toast. From left to right is: Brenda, Ana, me, and Sam.

Kindergarten Graduation

Just returned from the Willow River kindergarten graduation program. Pictured above is our little graduate in the family, my niece Monica.Laura, Monica's younger sister, was a diligent photographer during the entire program.

Christmas fabrics started to arrive yesterday. Above is a grouping by Moda called Holly Jolly Snowmen. We have the panel, charm packs and three other coordinating prints. One is a really rich red that I just love.

Three new fabrics from the new Valori Wells line, Del Hi came in yesterday too.

Another new Christmas line by Moda, Majestic Yule. These fabrics have a delicate touch of gold metallic to them. The cardinals are an intense red.

Next week, we still have openings for the X bag purse class on Tuesday 10-1pm and Thursday 5:30-8:30pm. Also, daytime open sewing on Tuesday. Call or stop in to register.

Start of a busy week...

Well, I hope everyone had a great weekend and a nice Mother's Day! Shawn and I went golfing with his mom yesterday. It was a great day for golf, now I just need to learn how to actually hit the ball! My mom is traveling so I only spoke to her on the phone. She and Dad were in the Badlands of South Dakota, on a mission to see a herd of buffalo. Sounded like they were enjoying great weather and a good trip. Some of the rest of us will be joining them in Idaho this next weekend. Boise is the home of the Wildland Firefighter Memorial. This next weekend is family weekend when they place new memorial markers to honor wildland firefighters. Saturday there will be demonstrations of forest service activities and Sunday is the memorial ceremony. This year a marker will be placed in honor of my brother, Mike. I am really looking forward to the trip. I know it will be very emotional, but I am and always was so proud of Mike and his firefighting career. It just feels right that there is a way to honor him.

In the meantime, I need to get a few samples done this week and get the shop ready to be without me for a few days. I just received an email confirming the shipment of some of this year's Christmas fabrics. They should arrive by Wednesday already! Tomorrow (Tuesday) is daytime open sewing. Join us if you can. Thursday is our first apron class. We are doing the jelly roll friendly Four Corners apron at 5:30pm. Call the shop to sign up.

This past Saturday was busy! Melissa ran the "10K Moose Run" in Moose Lake. The weather was great and it is good to have this race back in action after one year off. Lots of runners, lots of volunteers and from what I could see a successful day. As a former participant in this race for many years, I send a big high five to the planning commitee. Good Job! Melissa is an effortless runner and has embraced running with enthusiasm. She will be the first to say that her brother Mike is her running inspiration, Mike ran daily for fitness, a Wildland Firefighter can owe his life to being in shape and being fast when needed. No one would be prouder of Melissa's racing and running than Mike.

After the race it was run home and head to the newest family business "The Happy Scizzor". The relatives were all here from the Metro area to "check out" the new shop and get glammed up in the process.

Today I am at "work". Looks as tho the Quilt Shop was very busy over the weekend too. Wendy and Jane were working and Melissa and I so appreciate this capable duo who come in and pinch hit when the two of us both need to be gone. Along with Deb who also fills in for us we occasionally get to go to the same events. Many Thanks!

This will be a busy week. Kicked off with Block of the Month, then on to Thimbleberries Club, pillowcase class on Wednesday and Saturday. Well I better get sewing, before I go I wanted to tell you. I went to the mailbox last week and when I opened it I had recieved a handwritten letter. I cannot tell you how much pleasure this gave me. In this world of e-mail, texting and cell phones, hand written correspondence has fallen by the wayside. I myself am a letter writer. I started writing letters seriously in the 80's after the death of my Grandpa. I would write long letters to my Grandma hoping that something I had to say would for a short time help her deep sadness. As I look back I think what I was really doing was writing to help my deep sadness. Whatever the reason it started me writing. I challenge you all, today, pick up a pen and write someone a letter. The paper doesn't matter, the length doesn't matter, what matters is this. Say the words you hear in your head when you think of this person. Tell them that story, the words from your head, that you can feel in your heart. Do it. You will always be glad you did.

And this: My Son Mike is going to be recognized and honored in Boise, Idaho this Spring. The "Wildland Firefighters Monument" is located there on the grounds of the Interagency Dispatch Center. A marker will be placed for Mike with his name, the designation that he is from Minnesota and the name of his crew, "Black Mountain Hotshots". Mike's family will stand as the representatives for Mike when his name is called among the names of the other men and women of fire that will be honored for the year 2009. I cannot even tell you how much he is missed.

Well, I am back and well rested. Shawn and I went with a group of family and friends to Chula Vista Resort in the Wisconsin Dells. Great place and a great deal this time of year! Thank you, again to Mom for taking such great care of the shop!

I can see why adding pictures is hard for Mom. I had great plans to add pictures today from her camera and I can't figure it out; need a different cord, I guess. Today is my sister, Heidi's, grand opening of her very own salon in Denham. It is an adorable place. I hope to post the pics sometime this weekend yet. If you have time today, take the drive. Her open house is until 6pm. Go west of Sturgeon Lake on Farm to Market Road about 6 miles. Turn left on Denham Road and continue for about 2 miles. Cross over the bridge and you will see her cute yellow cottage on the left, The Happy Scissor Beauty Shoppe.

O.K. So here's how the day went. I sewed, made mistakes, ripped. Sewed, made mistakes ripped. I know we all have those days where your intentions are good but for every step you take forward, you go back. If I was at home I would have quit and gone for a walk with the dog (more about "Naughty Nevada", the new black lab pup later)but when I am at "work" I must stick with the project. I know many of you have seen the "pleated pillow samples" here at the shop. They are a favorite of mine, done in soft porch pastels. Well, I am making a set in Christmas fabric and this is one of those times where I wish I knew how to post a photo, they are cute. A photo would speak the loudest. Again I will learn. Just a heads up for everyone that is joining us for Quilt Retreat in the fall. I am going to lobby hard for the pillows to be one of our projects. One jelly roll makes three pillows, great gifts or just enjoy for yourself.
Have you seen the new "Snap Sacks". They are quick projects, tablerunner or table-topper size, all fabric, backing, binding and pattern in a sack. A new one is released each month, they are quick and fun. We have moved on to month #4 and there are samples of each and everyone in the shop.
Finally, my mistakes today might be your gift tomorrow. I thought it might be fun to send you on a little hunt around the shop. Although Melissa and I work hard on the quality of our samples, mistakes happen. The project I worked on today required emergency piecing, twice. So, here's the deal. Stop in the shop and if you can find my mistakes, you can choose a free fat quarter from the basket at check-out. This giveaway is blog driven only, it will not be advertised at the shop. Don't wait, limited to the first 25 detectives. I'll even give you a clue.

I am at the shop early today to ready things for open sewing. Melissa is out of town for a mini-vacation and I am the keeper of the gate, so to speak. People often say when arriving "oh, you're working today?" I always say that "working" might be too strong of a word for what I am doing. To be here surrounded by this wonderful fabric talking to people as interested in Quilting as I am, well you get the picture. Anyhow, back to open sewing, we sew here at the shop most every Tuesday (and sometimes Wednesday), it's informal, fun and open to everyone. We feed each others interests, trade inspiration, talk about things completely un-quilt-related, laugh, sometimes cry and of course we eat. You are welcome anytime!
I wanted to let you know about a few new things at the shop that I think you will love. We have new bolts from a line called "Hot Blossom" by Robert Kaufman. Beautiful deep brown with turquise flowers. I picture aprons, totes and of course all things "quilt". Next, bolts of baby flannel from RJR called Lullaby and Goodnight. Not traditional baby colors of pink and blue but instead what the young Moms seem to prefer, brown, yellow and pale green. Very contempory, very baby! The "Oh,Cherry Oh" line from Me and My Sister Designs by Moda has been a fast seller. Melissa has tablerunners made up that are so cute! 36x20 the kit includes it all. Binding and backing too. On your patio table, your sunroom and of course the kitchen, perfect. Finally if today you are not in the mood to sew but instead think you might just want to drag a lawn chair to the back-yard and soak up this beautiful sunshine, stop in for the new "Quilt Sampler" magazine, just delivered from Fed-Ex. Then get a glass of tea, a comfortable chair and a spot in the sun to dream. Till next time!

Well, here I go. This falls under the category of "jumping off the dock". Melissa has invited me to blog along side her and although I am honored, there is a feeling of do I have anything to say that others want to listen to? I can navigate the computer pretty well but some things continue to elude me ie: adding pictures, but I will learn.
I can't begin this journey without telling you a story. Four years ago when Melissa opened this shop, I had no idea that the Seams Like Home Family would grow like it has and having said that I certainly never thought that like all families do, they would support us on the good days and stay with us through the worst. I am the Mother of four children. Melissa is the oldest followed by Mike, Katie and Heidi. Two years and five months ago, my son, Melissa's brother was killed in an accident. Mike's death launched all of us on a grief journey that none of us were prepared for. We had not packed, we had no map. The english language fails when an attempt is made to put words to this grief. I would compare it like this. You have planned a trip your whole life. A place you want to live, maybe Minnesota, even Australia. You have done your research, trained, prepared. You are optimistic and hopeful, heading toward your destination, the wonderful place where your dreams reside. Suddenly and without any warning you find yourself in say Bosnia. A war torn country where you know no one, you don't speak the language and you understand in the deepest place that this is where you now live and you will never go back to the place you were. The Seams Like Home family and this community at large continue to lay down trail for the new destination I will someday find. I tell you this because I can only write from where I am. I know that I am not alone. Many of our customers share stories of their own, some of them about trips they plannned for a lifetime and others like me, that got shuttled to a place they have never been. Seams Like Home took on a job it may never have seen on opening day. This is a place of creativity, hope, healing and understanding. It is also a place of joy, laughter, hugs and acceptance. You are welcome here any time.

Well, here goes nothing... Seams Like Home Quilt Shop is entering the blogging world! Mom and I will be working together to try to keep the blog updated with new products and events at the shop along with other things on our minds.

We recently did a full re-arrange here at the shop below are a few photos of the work in progress and some of the results. (left to right:the new baby room, hanging the new sign, classroom space, Nolan, the mini helper (my nephew)
